The Metal Voice Interview
In an interview with The Metal Voice, Metal Church guitarist Kurdt Vanderhoof shared his thoughts about the current state of music. Vanderhoof stated, “I’m enjoying the music industry.” “I like the new music business.”
Kurdt also spoke about the band’s debts on the first couple of albums. He also stated that you should be similar to Metallica if you’re looking to earn money through the music industry. Here’s the quote:
“After some period of time with a big label such as Electra you discover how the business operates and, in our specific instance was not going to our advantage and you discover the meaning of the term”recoup.
Then you realize that there’s no way to earn any cash until you break the record like Metallica; however, until then, you’re operating in debt and will never get out. Everyone is paid first, but Metallica gets the last payment. I have publishing rights, that isn’t much, but there aren’t any other royalty payments.
About Debt
We’re still in debt for the first couple of albums. Not only that, but it’s difficult to figure out the number of profits or debt we have made over all the years. They provide statements that you cannot read unless you’re a lawyer, and I’ve written them off.
You’re in debt for touring support or video production; you’re in debt for everything. These are just a few reasons I love the new music industry, and there’s more good in the new music industry than there is negative. It’s more direct the artists to their fans, and also us old people can still enjoy an opportunity to make a living.”
He also confirmed the truth behind the rumors that ‘Lars Ulrich was a member of Metal Church in 1981”. He stated:
” We never played together; that was one of the rumors that circulated some time ago, that we had a drummer named John. Drummers, but it was never real.
I was in San Francisco trying to start the band. I ended up having a routine type of conversation with him. He had just arrived from Denmark and was planning to move to L.A. The only thing we were able to do was to have a party, hang out and talk about joining a band. We were friends before we met. but we were friends before he moved into L.A.”

Kurdt About Nirvana(Rock Band)
Metal Church founder and musician Kurdt Vanderhoof was interviewed for an episode on the “Talk Toomey” podcast.
“I know Krist [Novoselic, NIRVANA bassist]; he was a one of friend of mine. They came out to our rehearsals and stuff when we’d have party rehearsals where we started. But, for the most part, we were a big joke to them.
They were the nice and cool guys, and we were the old metal guys. Even on that [NIRVANA’s] ‘Bleach’ [album], [Kurt] Cobain spelled his name like mine — Kurdt. I could never quite figure that out, but I put two and two together, and they were poking fun.
The MELVINS think I’m just obnoxious and all this stuff because they’re too cool. And we’re a bunch of rock stars, and they’re too cool. So, you know, fuck them.”
Kurdt said that he “never had any trouble” with NIRVANA and added that the band “always liked” their music. “I thought it was great,” he said. “And I liked the MELVINS, and I thought we were friends, especially Buzz [ Osborne] and I. And then I come to find out later that we were a big joke, and I was a big joke to all these guys.”
He added: “I never did anything to them. I always liked them. I thought they were great and we were friends. But the whole NIRVANA thing, I figured out later through talking with people that when they were doing their thing, because they were all punky and cool, that we were the metal guys and we’re stupid, we’re posers and rock stars.
So it was cool not to like us — especially me, being from Aberdeen, and those guys being from Aberdeen, they were, like, ‘Fuck those guys!’ Oh, well.”
